Whisky Basics

Masterclass Whisky

Whisky, also spelled whiskey, is a type of alcoholic beverage made from grain and aged in oak barrels. The word whisky comes from the Gaelic word “uisge beatha,” which means “water of life.” There are many different types of whisky, including Scotch, Irish, Bourbon, and Japanese, and each type has its own unique characteristics and flavors.

Scotch Whisky

Scotch whisky is made in Scotland from malted barley, wheat, or rye and aged in oak barrels for at least three years. It is known for its rich, smoky flavor, which is often influenced by the peat used to dry the malt during the distillation process. There are several different regions in Scotland that produce whisky, including the Highlands, the Lowlands, and Islay, and each region has its own distinctive style of whisky.

Irish Whiskey

Irish whiskey is made in Ireland from a blend of malted and unmalted barley and aged in oak barrels for at least three years. It is known for its smooth, creamy flavor and is often triple-distilled, which gives it a distinctive character. Irish whiskey can be made in a variety of styles, including single malt, single grain, and blended. Single malt Irish whiskey is made from 100% malted barley and is produced at a single distillery, while single grain Irish whiskey is made from a single grain, such as corn or wheat, and may be produced at multiple distilleries. Blended Irish whiskey is made from a blend of single malt and single grain whiskies.

Bourbon

Bourbon is a type of American whisky that is made from at least 51% corn and aged in charred oak barrels for at least two years. It is known for its rich, sweet flavor and amber color. Bourbon is produced in a variety of styles, including straight bourbon, which is aged for at least two years, and blended bourbon, which is made from a blend of straight bourbons and other whiskies.

Japanese Whisky

Japanese whisky is a relatively new type of whisky that has gained popularity in recent years. It is made in Japan from a variety of grains, including barley, corn, and rye, and is aged in oak barrels. Japanese whisky is known for its smooth, elegant flavor and is often compared to Scotch whisky. Some of the most well-known brands of Japanese whisky include Suntory and Nikka.
